CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

Project Type: Architecture

Building Type: Institutional

Status: Competition Proposal

Year: 2022

Location: Bangalore

The Council of Architecture launched a national competition for its first regional centre in Bangalore—COE-B. Envisioned as the first of many across India, these centres aim to streamline and enhance architectural education regionally, reporting to the COA headquarters in Delhi. The site lies within the lush Visvesvaraya University campus, with a seasonal nala running through it.

Roundabout Site -
Bound by roads on two sides and academic departments on the others, the centrally located site demanded sensitivity to existing circulation. We proposed a ‘roundabout’ building—with no single front elevation. All four façades serve as entrances, each connecting to surrounding functions. Internally, programs are grouped around these entry points to ensure intuitive access and use.

Strong Edifice -
A singular built form was proposed to house all functions under one roof—an assertive yet elegant structure representing COA in the south. To soften the bulk and bring in visual dynamism, staggered terraces were introduced, allowing the building to sit lightly within its green surroundings.
