We were presented with a pre-existing structural shell—with columns and slabs already in place—and asked to improve spatial quality and create a vibrant, child-friendly elevation. Our intervention focused on four key zones: elevation, entry canopy, corridors, and a central atrium.
Façade Design -
The elevation plays on rhythm and asymmetry. Extending the existing columns and slabs created a checkerboard framework, while staggered window openings broke this rhythm to introduce movement across the 100m-long façade. Large ribbon windows were framed with colourful fins to reduce glare while bringing in natural light—essential on the barren site. A bright palette of butter yellow, mustard, and sea blue made the school look like a painted canvas—inviting and playful from afar.
Entry Canopy -
Using the same rhythm-asymmetry language, we designed a stepped canopy of L-shaped members that funnelled visitors into the school. These were tied together with pergola beams that cast lively shadows, making the approach dynamic and welcoming.
Corridor Strategy -
The original double-loaded corridors were dark and stuffy. To improve airflow, we introduced lintel-level louvres in classrooms to create a stack effect for ventilation, while large windows brought in fresh air. Light wells were added to naturally brighten the passageways.
Central Atrium -
A large, underutilized hall abutting the entrance canopy was transformed into the vibrant heart of the school. Dividing it into two parts, the front became a lobby with reception and admin areas, while the rear became a stepped gathering space, connecting the ground floor directly to the first, for play, meetings, and performances. Balconies from upper floors overlook the space, enhancing interactivity. A circular skylight above pours sunlight into the atrium—drawing students from dim corridors into this bright, communal hub.
